Social Issues: Letters

7/12/01

Star Tribune
To the Editor,

A community is horrified -- caught between anger and sympathy -- that an innocent baby was forgotten in a van and died of heat and dehydration (Star Tribune 7/12/01). The legal system has no remedies. The parents will be punished all their lives by their remorse, and in rethinking all the “what ifs.” In their preoccupation with legitimate adult concerns, this one event has changed their lives forever and cut short the life of a precious child.

Why is it that so many people cannot see that the very same thing happens every time an abortion is performed? For what seem to be legitimate adult concerns, in a moment of preoccupation, with little or no appreciation that the lives of all concerned are changed forever, a precious child’s life is cut short.

Sincerely,

Ross S. Olson MD
