The Surveyor is required to rule on the state of a toppled sniver. He records his judgement on the official scorecard as a notch, a "notnotch", or a "lost sniver" (one which pops out of its socket). Any appeal by the wafter concerning an allegedly illegal placement of a sniver is made to the Surveyer. The colorful old man of surveying, Algernon "Speed" Thiselthwate, used to spend his spare moments during the game determining the measurements of the female spectators across the field with a transit and a trig table.
