From: Ross Olson Sent: December 08, 2007 To: Editor Star Tribune (opinion@startribune.com) Subject: democracy You are correct that elections do not make a democracy. But it is also not enough to have "an infrastructure," such as courts, free press and checks and balances. What is actually needed is a particular worldview. Have you noticed that democracy has persisted only under the influence of the Christian West? The idea that human beings are a special creation of God, Who ultimately makes the rules and to Whom we are all finally responsible, is foundational. That view is also most compatible with religious freedom, because God allows us the freedom to accept or reject His love, demonstrated dramatically by the events of the first Christmas.
