To: Editor Star Tribune Subject: Updated Motto Dear Editor, I was pondering the motto of my Alma Mater, The University of Minnesota, carved on the façade of Northrop Auditorium as I went to see my son receive his master's degree. I think it needs to be rephrased or at least footnoted to clarify current practice. The brackets enclose the suggested amendments. “The University of Minnesota. Founded in the faith that men are ennobled by understanding [despite long historical evidence to the contrary], dedicated to the advancement of learning and the search for truth [unless it leads anywhere near religion, the supernatural or God], devoted to the instruction of youth [but withholding evidence that might erode their faith in key cultural paradigms] and the welfare of the state [skip the words between welfare and state].” Ross S.
