Social Issues: Letters

Subject: Grand Theft Auto IV

A reader defends Grand Theft Auto IV ("It's Just A Game" 5/6/08) and claims that the realistic graphics make him really think about what he is doing and points to his happy marriage and well adjusted kids as proof of the endorsement. Aside from the obvious "get a life," I would like to see an honest opinion from his wife and some long term follow-up on his kids. He apparently still has a conscience that is touched by the look of anguish on his virtual victims' faces, but how long will that last under the desensitizing repetition? And the next generation, growing up immersed in sex and violence without consequences, is bound to see domination as a sign of maturity. Also, it is not as easy as it seems to keep the virtual from eventually spilling over into the real.
