From: Ross Olson <ross{at}rossolson.org> Sent: Wednesday, June 26, 2019 To: opinion{at}startribune.com Subject: Just the Stigma? Just the Stigma? A recent commentary (“Pediatric Gender Care Is Safe and Necessary” Star Tribune 6/26/2019) claims that the adverse effects seen in the lives of persons with transgender issues are due exclusively to the stigma. Fortunately, that claim has been studied. In affirming Sweden, there is 10 to 30 year follow-up on adults who have undergone gender reassignment. For about 10 years, they seem to be doing fine. Then their suicide rate skyrockets to 20 times the expected rate. Their problems have not been solved and they want to end their lives. AND THEY HAVE BEEN AFFIRMED COMPLETELY THE WHOLE TIME! A principle of medicine is “First Do No Harm.” These people need help but sex change is not it. It is irresponsible to ignore scientific data. See: “Long-Term Follow-Up of Transsexual Persons Undergoing Sex Reassignment Surgery: Cohort Study in Sweden.” http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0016885 Ross S.
