From: Ross Olson <ross{at}rossolson.org> Sent: Wednesday, March 21, 2018 To: opinion{at}startribune.com Subject: Kersten I applaud you for printing Katherine Kersten’s piece on discipline policy knowing that there would be an outcry. But then, when you allowed response, instead of a positive and a negative side by side, you put up two negatives. That is followed by what? A positive response? No, another negative. Today’s “What Kersten Can’t Grasp…” has too many errors to touch on all of them, but take one. “Students with disabilities” gives the reading public a picture of white canes and wheelchairs. But as a retired pediatrician I know that some of those have attention deficit hyperactivity and although they have a much harder time controlling themselves, for the sake of fellow students and eventually themselves, they may need to be taken out of the mainstream and taught behavior that is acceptable in the adult world which we hope they can eventually enter. I also know that there is a “disability” category of emotionally behaviorally disturbed students, including so called obstinate defiant disorder. These are kids who have learned to get their way by intimidation, not only at school but sadly even at home. In another era they would be called spoiled brats! Star Tribune, do not knuckle under to the book burners and censors. Keep printing ideas that challenge and let the interaction flow – both ways. Ross S.
