Subject: The Problem of the Elderly
Michael Gerson analyzes the problem of the young paying for the care of the elderly ("Again, it is the
young picking up the tab," November 4, 2009). Since ancient times in stable societies, the younger
generation has always taken responsibility for the older, usually as families and in reciprocity for the
care given them in childhood. The problem today is that since 1973, we have eliminated 40 million of
the next generation.
