To the Editor,
The greatest mystery of evolution is that intelligent people, such as Stephen Jay Gould, can make such basic logical errors as to say, "Evolution is a fact, like apples falling out of trees.”
Enough is known about the physics and mathematics involved to say that evolution is like apples falling UP and regularly hitting a bullseye on the moon.
Life is a fact. Evolution is an explanation whose time has passed. What goes on is the inertia of careers and reputations based on it.
