Subject: “Once Again It’s Not About the Babies”

To the Editor:
A reader writes in a featured letter to the Star Tribune, headlined as, “Once
Again It’s Not About the Babies” (September 4, 2021), highlighting alleged
prolife hypocrisy. What is the “anti-choice” camp not doing? They are not
supporting sex education in the schools or working to identify the other
parent and insist on lifetime financial and emotional support of that child.

It is gratifying to see a frequently ignored fact allowed to see the light of
publication. There is indeed another parent! Babies do not spread like
COVID. But sex education, as it is taught in public schools, does not help
reach the stated goal. Adolescents in America are taught, exactly what
“the word on the street” also says, that you can do anything your heart tells
you to do if you use the proper protection.

The protection is not perfect and babies, among other things, do
happen. One of them is that self-esteem, especially of the female
participant, takes a big hit. Sexual intimacy cries out to be exclusive and
permanent. But lifetime commitment is old-fashioned and therefore
obsolete, which generally sounds fine to the male participant.

The availability of abortion seems to be the answer – the pregnancy goes
away, responsibility with it. But there are long-term effects beyond the
short-term relief. If you can be influenced by science, see
www.rossolson.org/abortion .

But there is more, from the book “Hooked” by Doctors McIlhaney and Bush:
“Sexual activity releases chemicals in the brain, creating emotional bonds
between partners. This is great news for marriages! Once formed,
however, breaking these bonds can have damaging effects on the brain
such as depression and difficulty bonding with someone else in the future.”
