Subject: Single Parents
Essentially everyone who writes or talks about the financial difficulties of single mothers (and single
fathers) tiptoes right around the core problem – singleness! The concept of marriage has been
smudged into “being with someone to whom I presently feel romantically attached.” To propose that a
couple commit themselves to a permanent relationship for the sake of the children sounds medieval and
abusive. Does the fact that it takes a mother and a father to make a baby in the first place arouse
anybody’s curiosity? All the data shows that in every measure of wellbeing, children do best in that sort
of family. But, of course, we cannot restrict anyone’s freedom, except, maybe, the most vulnerable.
