Subject: Yoga
The report about Yoga in the classrooms ("Acing the mat test," 11/30/09) reminds me of MPS attempt
to introduce guided imagery into a health program 20 years ago in which students visualized
themselves well. While there are vigorous efforts to keep Christianity out of the schools, the religious
nature of yoga is completely ignored. It is a Hindu (New Age) technique intended to induce a state of
altered consciousness for the purpose of enlightenment. In "release from the shackles of reason" one
discovers that the world we know is an illusion created by our minds. Not all the student will obviously
get that far, but not all students involved in a school sponsored Bible study and prayer meeting would
become Christians. Yet the Bible study would never even be considered.
