What would Madison do?

Your July 5 editorial mocking Judge Roy Moore of Alabama for having the Ten Commandments posted outside his courtroom displays your own ignorance on the subject. It would be an easy exercise in history to show how the commandments were the basis of many of our laws in the founding of our country. Surely the father of the Constitution, James Madison, would have something to say. If things are as you say, Madison certainly would not have issued his presidential proclamation establishing a national day of public humiliation and prayer. My opinion is that Madison would have sided with Moore. Perhaps you should write an editorial chiding him for misunderstanding the constitution.

To the Editor of Star and Tribune,

Your recent editorial mocking Judge Moore for his having the Ten commandments posted outside his courtroom and using the so called 11th commandment of “if you don’t know what you are talking about you should shut up.”, was displaying some of your own ignorance on the subject. It would be an easy history lesson to reveal how the 10 commandments were the basis of many of our laws in the founding of our country. Surely the “Father of the constitution,” James Madison, would have something to say on this so called “wall of separation” and what was the intent of the constitution. If things are as you say, Madison certainly would not have given this public proclamation (below) while President, freely making references to God! Perhaps you should write an editorial chiding James Madison for misunderstanding the constitution! My opinion is that Madison would have sided with Moore.

Proclamation of a Day of Public Humiliation and Prayer

by James Madison

A Proclamation. By the President of the United States of America

Whereas the Congress of the United States, by a joint resolution of the two Houses have signified a request, that a day may be recommended, to be observed by the people of the United States, with religious solemnity, as a day of public humiliation and prayer: ..,

I do therefore recommend a convenient day to be set apart, for the devout purposes of rendering the Sovereign of the Universe, and the Benefactor of Mankind, the public homage due to His holy attributes; of acknowledging the transgressions which might justly provoke the manifestations of His divine displeasure; of seeking his merciful forgiveness.
